Ebert Silva Holidays launches ‘Nidahase Daruwo’ coinciding with 72nd Independence Day

‘Nidahase Daruwo’ (Children of Freedom) was launched by Ebert Silva Holidays on 3 February at the S. de S. Jayasinghe Madya Maha Vidyalaya Dehiwala, coinciding with the 72nd Independence Day with the objective of inspiring, motivating, and encouraging future generations to be patriotic, dutiful and responsible citizens of the motherland who will be empowered to propel Sri Lanka to new heights of development, sustainability and prosperity.

About 150 students representing Holy Family Convent, Dehiwala, Buddhagosha Maha Vidyalaya Kalubowila, Subodha Balika Vidyalaya, St. Mary’s College and S.D.S. Jayasinghe Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Dehiwala participated in this event. As part of the program, they were enriched of the long, remarkable and outstanding history of the island and the stupendous feats by their forefathers in engineering, architecture, medicine and arts among others, which to-date are marvellous creations of humanity that have amazed the world. 

The distinctiveness and uniqueness of the island nation was also elaborated with the fact that the world focus is now on Sri Lanka as a foremost tourist destination of the region and the world. In such a backdrop, Ebert Silva Holidays joined hands with ‘Jeewayu’, an organisation for the protection and sustainability of the environment to make the children aware of the vital necessity to safeguard the environment and the need to responsibly manage and dispose waste in their schools and homes for its sustainability. 

At a time when life on the planet is threatened with climate change and environmental pollution the paramount necessity to safeguard our country and the planet was conveyed to the children by ‘Jeewayu’ with the technical assistance for the event given by the Waste Management Authority of the Western Province.

“Nidahase Daruwo signifies our company’s contribution to the national cause of empowering the future generations with love for the motherland and sensitivity to the environment and all other forms of life around them. This is also an effort to inspire and empower the children to take Sri Lanka to new heights of prosperity,” said Ebert Silva Holidays Chairperson Rajini de Silva Mendis. “This is only the first step of a more far reaching programme that will be held annually hereafter coinciding with Independence Day, reaching children throughout the island,” she elaborated.

The event was graced by Ruwini Dharmasiri, founder of ‘Jeewayu’ and former Chairperson of the Waste Disposal Authority of Sri Lanka, many principals of participant schools and teachers.

Valuable plants such as pomegranate (punica granatum), Sugar Apple (Annona muricata), Rose Apple (syzygium jumbos), plants of Humming bird tree (sesbania grandiflora), Amberella (spondias dulcis) among others were distributed to schools which the children are able to plant, take care of and enjoy, within their school premises.

The day’s event ended with an educational tour around the city of Colombo on open deck double decker buses where the children were given professional insight into the latest developments of the city with special focus on the Port City, which will transform the city of Colombo and Sri Lanka into an exciting economic hub in the region.
