Unidil in forefront of corrugated carton field winning five Gold Awards

Unidil was able to bag five Gold Awards out of six Quality Circles at the Annual National Convention of Quality and Productivity held at Nelum Pokuna, organised by the Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP). 

Unidil has shone at this convention over the past two decades. The leader of the packaging industry in the island, the company manufactures corrugated cartons and paper sacks for the industrial sector in the country. It endeavours to produce high quality packaging solutions at lowest cost to maintain a competitive edge. Hence, the company had been implementing various quality and productivity enhancement tools and good practices over the last two decades. Unidil has created a culture in which the whole work force works together as a family to achieve the goals of the company and its employees. It has successfully implemented the 5S, Quality Circles, Continuous Improvement Projects, TPM Projects and Just In Time (JIT) practices to improve the employee participation in organisational activities. 

Unidil’s commitment to quality and productivity has been demonstrated by winning Taiki Akimoto 5’S’ Award, the Nagaaki Yamamoto Kaizen Award, National Productivity Awards and the Best CEO Awards, among a host of other achievements. Unidil CEO/Director Bannet Gamalath said, “We are incredibly proud and honoured to have been recognised with these prestigious awards. Unidil employs a work force of around 400 and caters to around 20% of the corrugated carton requirements of the country. Further, its paper sacks operations hold a market share over 35% in the tea, cement, dc and other related paper sack markets.”

By implementing quality and productivity tools and through the development of human resources, Unidil has overcome the challenge of delivering cartons and paper sacks within a very short period to fulfil the urgent needs of customers. Having introduced the Quality Circle concept almost 20 years ago, the employees are consequently given an opportunity to participate in the process of the organisation’s development. They are involved in providing KAIZEN suggestions for improvement, with over 1,000 suggestions being generated each year. Through TPM projects, Unidil has been able to improve machine efficiency and running time. Further, Unidil has implemented management concepts such as Six Sigma and many other concepts to improve quality and productivity. Consequently, Unidil has been able to produce packaging at very competitive price to support the industrial and export sector of the country, and has added the state-of-the-art machineries and new technologies to cater present and future needs of our customers. This has led to tremendous development within the company, making it possible to maintain the production cost at the minimum level.  Unidil is equipped with ISO 9001-2015, ISO 14000-2015, ISO 22000-2005, HACCP, WRAP, SMETA (SEDEX). Gamalath said, “It is the co-operation of the employees that has been instrumented in all these achievements. Hence, I do not like to call them as employees, instead they should be called as ‘partners’ of the company. Through our collective strengths, we at Unidil continue to strive for excellence in all frontiers by delivering high quality cartons and paper sacks.”
