  • CMA Sri Lanka to host CMA Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards 2019, CMA National Management Accounting Conference 2019 and Commonwealth Accountants Conference

This year CMA Sri Lanka will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. The first conference was held in 2005 and this year CMA is holding the 15th annual flagship event which will be held on 9h and 10 September and the International Integrated Reporting Workshop on 11 September at the Taj Samudra, Colombo.

The ‘CMA Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards 2019’ and the inauguration of the CMA National Management Accounting Conference 2019 combined with the Commonwealth Accountants Conference will be on 9 September at 4 p.m. at the Taj Samudra, Grand Marquee, Colombo. 

This will also mark CMA celebrating its 20th anniversary with a Global Conference theme ‘Sustainability Development Goals Agenda 2030 – The Role of Professional Accountants’.

The inauguration of the Conference Technical Sessions will be held on 10 September commencing 8.30 a.m. at the Taj Samudra, Grand Marquee followed by a Post Conference International Integrated Reporting Workshop on ‘Integrated Reporting Practical Aspects’ on 11 September from 9 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. at the Taj Samudra Upper Crystal Ballroom.  CMA Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards 2019 the highlight of Annual Reporting in Sri Lanka supported by the Colombo Stock Exchange is organised for the fifth year in succession and the awards will be presented on 9 September for the 10 Best Integrated Reports for Excellence in Integrated Reporting  and the  Overall Winner – Gold Trophy,  Overall 1st Runner up – Silver Trophy, Overall 2nd Runner up – Bronze Trophy,  Merit Award for Integrated Thinking (Sponsored by the Deakin Business School, Australia), Certificates of Merit.

There will be Sector Awards on Integrated Reporting for Banking, Finance and Leasing, Insurance, Manufacturing Industry, Trade and Commerce, Diversified Holdings, State-Owned Enterprises/Companies, Hotels and Travels, Plantations, Healthcare, Power and Energy, Small and Medium Enterprises, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)/Not-for-Profit Organisations (NPOs)/Chambers of Commerce/Educational Institutes.

Special Awards in Integrated Reporting on Conciseness, Capitals, Materiality, Value Creation, Strategic Focus, Most Improved Integrated Report, SDG Reporting and Diversity Reporting.

It is encouraging to note that 50 companies have submitted applications and will be reviewed by an evaluation panel and the international and local panel of judges will decide on the final winners. 

The conduct of the International Workshop on ‘Integrated Reporting in Practice’ on 11 September at the Taj Samudra will be addressed by an eminent panel of experts both international and local and will also provide  hands on experience in the preparation of an integrated report to participants.

The keynote speaker at the IR Awards and inaugural ceremony will be International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) London Chair Emeritus Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Amsterdam, World Bank on Corporate Governance Private Sector Advisory Group member, Supreme Court of South Africa former Judge, African Integrated Reporting Council Chair and Integrated Reporting Committee Chair South Africa Prof. Mervyn E. King. He will speak on the topic ‘Why Integrated Reporting and Good Governance for Sustainable Value Creation’. 

The welcome address will be delivered by President CMA Sri Lanka Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala. Prof. Mervyn King will be joined by eminent speaker from Singapore National University of Singapore former Professor in Accounting and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) current Associate Provost (Skills Future and Staff Development) Prof. Ho Yew Kee. He will speak on ‘Accountability, Meritocracy and Anti-Corruption key to achieve Sustainable Development’. 

Prof. Graham Terry will give the judges report and is an integrated reporting advisor and an ambassador for the IIRC. He is a professor of practice at the University of Johannesburg where he is coordinating courses and research on integrated reporting and thinking. He is a Chartered Accountant (SA) and was a member of the IIRC working group that developed the International Integrated Reporting Framework published in 2013. 

He was a founding member of the Integrated Reporting Committee of South Africa and Chairman of the working group which developed the first discussion paper on integrated reporting. He assisted in the establishment of the CMA annual integrated reporting awards in Sri Lanka and serves on the panel of judges.

Colombo Stock Exchange CEO Rajeeva Bandaranayake: ‘Supporting Partner CMA Excellence in IR Awards’ and GRI South Asia Director Dr. Aditi Haldar: ‘In partnership with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) the Supporting Partner for CMA NMAC and Commonwealth Accountants Conference’ will address the gathering. 

CMA Professional Excellence Award winners to outstanding professionals in Financial and Management Accounting, Research Forum Best Paper Presenters and Conference Sponsors will be recognised at the inaugural ceremony. 

The conference is specially meant for Directors, CEOS, Management and Financial Accountants, Managers and Executives in Marketing, IT, Human Resource, Banking, Finance, Insurance, Sustainability and CSR, Key Management of State Owned Enterprises and Government, Academic staff of Universities, Technical Colleges, Professionals and others in industry, commerce, non- profit institutions and professional bodies.   

Special concessions will be given for Group registrations and those from Academia, Government, development agencies and Non-Profit organisations.
