NIBM partners Malaysia’s Limkokwing University of Creative Technology to offer diplomas and degrees

  • Shaping minds of the new generation of Sri Lanka by transforming creative industries 

Today, industries are based on creative assets and have gained a prominent place in the global economy due to its substantial market value and impact on the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP). (Potts et al, 2008). 

These creative industries are among the most influential sectors in the world trade, ranging from; traditional arts and crafts, publishing, music, and visual and performing arts to more technology intensive and services-oriented groups of activities such as film, television and radio broadcasting, new media and design.

Sri Lanka’s creative industries are young but hold great promise to become a major economic pillar for the nation and create numerous career opportunities. Already the country’s multi-billion dollar fashion manufacturing industry is adopting creative intelligence to super-charge their pristine worldwide reputation while other areas like interior design, graphic design, contemporary craft and product design are following an exponential growth curve.

It is in this context that NIBM decided to take a strategic decision in building a partnership with the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology to offer diplomas and degrees related to creative industries in Sri Lanka. 

Objectives of NIBM-Limkokwing National Innovation Centre (NIC)

 

NIBM is planning develop a partnership with LUCT to set up a National Innovation Centre (NIC) with a share of financial and technical assistance of the LUCT in the city of Colombo. Objectives of setting up of NIC are as follows. 

  • To provide opportunities for the youth by generating jobs in creative industries 
  • To provide opportunities for the youth with an ambition to change their future by developing their creative skills 
  • To provide opportunities for the youth in Sri Lanka to learn best practices from global creative industries
  • To create a path for students in Sri Lanka to pursue higher education in industry driven advanced diploma/degree programs 
  • To provide opportunities for Sri Lankan students to pursue higher education in globally recognised universities 

NIBM was established as the Management Development and Productivity Centre in 1968 under a technical assistance program of the UNDP/ILO to improve productivity through the development of managerial know-how among personnel in the public and private sector organisations. During the formative years, the primary emphasis of the Institute was to serve as a mid-career management development organisation. The Institution was granted corporate status by the National Institute of Business Management Law No. 23 of 1976 enacted by the Parliament of Sri Lanka. 

With effect from January 1977 the National Institute of Business Management came into being as a statutory body functioning under the then Ministry of Industries and Scientific Affairs. Presently, the Institute comes under the purview of the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training. NIBM at present primary focuses on development of professionals and industrialists in the fields of business management, computing, Engineering, Creative Design and languages.

Limkokwing is an award-winning global brand name respected for its ability to produce graduates who possess more than the certificates to show their technical capability. They graduate with additional soft skills in how they prepare their presentations and present their ideas. They learn to set goals and achieve the outcomes. 

The vision of the LUCT Business Innovation Centre is to create a new class of globally recognised graduates regardless of prior learning experience, who are capable of producing the most creative solutions and new wealth stream initiatives for the advancement of quality of life, the creative industry and society at large.
