01Visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a message in honour of the International Day of Vesak celebrations being held in Sri Lanka.

The following is the full text of his message.

I am honoured to be the Chief Guest at the 141h International Day of Vesak celebrations, which are being held for the first time in Sri Lanka. This is a befitting acknowledgement of Sri Lanka’s strong contribution in getting the United Nations to officially recognise this auspicious day. This event is also a tribute to the contribution that Buddhism has made, and continues to make, towards the spirituality and wellbeing of humanity.

Buddhism is a key pillar of the shared cultural heritage of India and Sri Lanka, spanning centuries. We are blessed to be guided by Gautama Buddha, the enlightened one, who exhorted us to obliterate any differences that divide one human being from another.

The thrice blessed day of Vesak provides us an opportunity to reflect on our common roots. It is also an occasion for us to look beyond into a future where we live together in peace and harmony, following the path that Buddha has shown us.

The issues that confront today’s world, where isolationism is trying to take precedence over togetherness, can be resolved only through collaboration and cooperation. The International Day of Vesak this year aptly focuses on the theme of ‘Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace’. Indeed, genuine social justice and peace can be a reality only when we demolish the walls and compartments that we build in our minds.

Let each of us light a lamp today and every day to provide light to one another.
