Pizza at its most basic is a flat bread with toppings strewn on it, and yet there is something about a slice of pizza that cannot be defined by such a clinical description. In modern times, it has become a staple in the diet of many a person from little children, to college kids rushing to complete assignments to adults coming home after a day of work.

As self-proclaimed foodie, I love a good slice of pizza and I maintain a mental list of the best places to enjoy great pizza around Colombo, a list that was updated as soon as I stepped inside Pranzo at Waters Edge.

Cooked to perfection in the beach oven inside the kitchen, the thin crust pizza served at Pranzo is a rare find. Its thin crust gives your palate the chance to truly experience the flavours of the topping. What I found most refreshing about the pizza was its lack of oily texture as I do not enjoy the greasy fingers that come with eating pizza.

At Pranzo you have a choice between 12 types of pizza all billed at affordable pricing. I had the chance to try out the tandoori chicken, the marinara and a veggie pizza. I can, of course, go to great lengths about the scrumptious taste of each, but special mention should be given to the veggie pizza. Even though I am not a vegetarian, I certainly appreciated the toppings which carried a hint of spiciness.

With a menu designed by a consulting Italian chef, the kitchen at Pranzo produces a pizza that gives you a hint of traditional Italian home cooking further enhanced by the fact that the ingredients are imported from Italy itself.

Pranzo also gives you the chance to customize your own toppings, which can once again make selecting your pizza a fun experience.

What makes pizza at Pranzo a truly memorable experience is the al fresco dining area which present a feast to your eyes that nearly rival the feast laid upon the table. With the breeze carrying the scent of freshly mown grass and the occasional bird darting to and fro, Pranzo gives you a dining experience that is incomparable.I also got the chance to meet Chef Buddhika, who took the chance to tell me about the pizza at Pranzo and to assure me that as the material is mostly imported from Italy itself, you are likely to experience a genuine Italian home cooked pizza. The charm of Pranzo was also heightened with the excellent care by Restaurant Manager Sanjeewa, who indulged me in some of my whims.

As the seating area overlooks the greenery with no walls to cut off the perfect view of the environment, you can enjoy your pizza as a fresh breeze caress you. The ambiance of Pranzo struck me as magical and very adaptable; while I enjoyed my pizza in the company of a small group, even a boisterous group of dinners will be able to have a blast without bothering the other patrons.
