01The Golden Key Hospital has enhanced its capabilities in retinal and cataract surgery with the acquisition of sophisticated new equipment from Zeiss, a world leader in optical systems and medical devices.

Described as a ‘new dimension in visualisation,’ the Opmi Lumera 700 from Zeiss gives the surgeon more information in its eyepiece with real-time Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) views during retina or cornea surgery.

Equipped with Zeiss Rescan 700, the Opmi Lumera 700 takes surgical microscopy to a whole new level with integrated intraoperative OCT enabling surgeons to visualise transparent structures of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye directly in the eyepiece, helping them to back up  their decisions, improve surgical techniques, and achieve better outcomes without compromising surgical workflow.

In retina surgery, this means that the surgeon can monitor vitreous traction during macula surgery and is provided a detailed view of the surgical field, with the ability to assess membrane removal, ensuring that all membrane residues have been removed.

In cornea surgery, the Zeiss Opmi Lumera 700 brings even the most minute anatomical structures clearly into view and gives surgeons the best anterior visualisation and highly precise assistance functions to accelerate procedural workflow and improve surgical accuracy.  Its highly stable, high-contrast red reflex further enhances detail recognition enabling surgeons to check the position of the graft and assess the interface to the patient cornea in Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) procedures.

“As a super-specialty hospital, we invest substantially in the latest and best medical equipment available to continuously upgrade our surgical standards and match those of leading hospitals around the world,” a spokesperson for the hospital stated.  “This commitment to patient outcomes through cutting-edge technology has enabled us to retain and consolidate our status in the spheres of eye and ENT care in Sri Lanka.”

The Golden Key Hospital is the only private sector hospital that is a centre of excellence dedicated and equipped for all eye and ENT related investigations, treatment and surgery. This state-of-the-art super specialty hospital is backed by a team of experts and nursing staff with specialised training on Eye and ENT. The hospital is equipped for 3D Optical Coherence Tomography and treatment of all eye diseases. Tests such as Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA), Fundus Photography, A&B scans, Visual field assessment, Pachymetry Binocular Single Vision test, computerised eye tests for spectacles, as well as laser treatment and phacoemulsification surgery for cataracts are done routinely at the hospital. The hospital also offers vitreoretinal surgery for problems such as retinal detachment, diabetic eye diseases and intraocular infection.

The hospital is managed by an Advisory Committee comprising of Professor Rohan W. Jayasekera, Emeritus Professor and former Dean the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo (Chairman), Dr. Saliya Pathirana, Senior Consultant Eye Surgeon, Dr. Saumya Paranawithana, Consultant Eye Surgeon, Dr. Dilruwani Aryasingha, Consultant Eye Surgeon and Niranjan Silva (Chief Operating Officer).
