Sri Lanka Masters Maroon team wins top trophy

43Sri Lanka Masters National Hockey Maroon Team led by the most senior Sri Lanka National Player Ashok Peiris became unbeaten champions, defeating Sri Lanka Masters National Hockey Gold Team by penalty strokes (02-01) in the finals at the Kandy Veterans Hockey Sixes organised by the Kandy District Hockey Association and Seetha Devi Sports Club and held on 28 and 29 January at University Grounds Peradeniya, Kandy.

The participating teams were as follows:

Group A: Sri Lanka Masters (Gold), CH & FC, Kandy S C

Group B: Sri Lanka Masters (Maroon), Rangers S C (Bangalore India), Malays S C

Sri Lanka Masters Maroon Hockey team were unbeaten Leaders of Group B and they met the strong Kandy SC (Group A Runners Up) in the semi-finals and beat Kandy SC 02 goals to nil. In the finals SL Masters Maroon met Sri Lanka Masters Gold team leader of Group A, which beat the Rangers S C Bangalore India team in the second semi-finals. The team was led by veteran M.G.M. Naleem. 

The veterans’ final match was played with Sri Lanka Masters and Sri Lanka Masters Maroon. Both teams played a very understanding and a clean hard game to win. But the match ended up with a scoreless draw. According to the tournament rules, winners shall be decided by a series of penalty strokes competition (three penalty stocks per team.) SL Masters Maroon scored 02 goals and SL Masters Gold scored 01 goal and the winners were Sri Lanka Masters Maroons Hockey team.

The best player of the over 40 veterans was T.M.P. Aberatne of SL Masters GOLD and Best Goal Keeper was SL Masters Maroon Team I.R.K. Wilwalaarchchi. 

Results

SL Masters beat Malays S C 03 nil. Goals scored by Ashok Peirs (01) and Duncan Devendra (02) goals each and beat Rangers S C (India) 02 to nil, goals scored by M. Cramer and Duncan Devendra.

In the semi-finals SL Maroons beat Kandy S C 02 nil and goals scored by M. Cramer and Ajith Manjula one each. 

At the finals SL Masters Marron beat SL Masters Gold in penalty stock 02-01. Goals scored by Ajith Manjula and M. Cramer for Maroons and P. Abeyrathna scored for the losers.
