BIA to implement Phase Two of development project

The Government last week approved a proposal to implement Phase Two of the Bandaranaike International Airport development project which includes construction of remote apron and taxiways. 

With the aim of catering to an increase in passenger arrivals to 14.5 million in 2020 from the current 9.5 million, the Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry recommends increasing the capacity of the airport to 15 million per year with loan assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. 

Accordingly, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the proposal to award the above contract as recommended by the Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee was approved by Cabinet. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has specified that the “Prime Contractor or Lead Partner in the case of Joint Venture Associations for the project” has to be a Japanese national.
