With the increasing demand for healthcare professionals globally, a degree in the healthcare sector has become the road to success. There are plenty of opportunities to pursue in this industry with stable employment and attractive salaries. For Sri Lankan students hoping to gain employment in the healthcare industry, International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS), the country’s premier healthcare training institute is now offering courses ranging from Diploma level up to the PhD level in the fields of Nursing, Biomedical Science, Physiotherapy and Health Administration in collaboration with a number of Australian, UK, US and Finland universities.

Students of IIHS have the opportunity to complete their studies up to a PhD qualification in Sri Lanka. However, students may also opt to transfer to a world renowned university in Australia, UK or USA with an immense potential for international career opportunities. An additional advantage of studying a course in the healthcare industry is the opportunity to attain a high salary, where professionals in the fields of Nursing, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Sciences and Health Management presently have a salary scale ranging from $AUD49,000 to $AUD130,000 per annum (approximately Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 1.2 million per month).

The programs are accessible to many students since it is open to those who have completed Advanced Level in any stream or have successfully completed a Foundation course at IIHS, following O/Ls.

The programs offered are:



Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled) – TAFE South Australia

In this program, students are required to follow the Certificate in Health Sciences for one year at IIHS following which they should migrate to Australia to complete the final 15 months of studies prior to obtaining the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled). Once the student completes the program with the required level of English proficiency, they are eligible to apply for the registration as an Enrolled Nurse in Australia. So far, over 50 students are pursuing their studies in Australia after successfully completing the Certificate in Health Science at IIHS. 

In combination, we also  Certificate III in aged care, which would make them eligible to work in Australia in an aged care setting, with attractive salary packages while they are studying. Upon the successful completion of the Diploma program they can also move in to the second year of Bachelors of Nursing program offered by Deakin University or University of South Australia.

However, if a student wishes to pursue a different discipline, they can enrol for any Diploma of choice offered by TAFE, after obtaining this certificate.



Bachelor of Nursing – Deakin University Australia

In this program, students must follow a three year Advanced Diploma in General Nursing and transfer to Deakin University, Australia to complete the final year to obtain the Bachelor of Nursing. After the Bachelors Degree the student may apply for registration at the Nursing and Midwifery Board in Australia to become a Registered Nurse. The Bachelor of Nursing program presents a very affordable and convenient pathway for a Medical Degree in Australia, if the student wishes to continue in the said direction. 

Associate Degree in Physical Therapy – SUNNY Canton, USA

In this program, students must complete the first three years at IIHS and the final 1.5 years at State University of New York. Currently, the first batch of students from IIHS has completed the Associate Degree in USA with highest honours. They have also successfully passed the national licensing examination which allows them to work as Assistant Physical Therapists in USA.  

Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy – Pathway to MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice, Coventry University, UK

 The 3 year Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy is also a popular course among the students who are keen to practice in the field of Physiotherapy. Upon completion of the three year Diploma at IIHS, students are eligible to complete the Masters in Physiotherapy Practice within one year at Coventry University, which is a prestigious university in UK.

Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy – Pathway to Bachelors in Physiotherapy, Metropolia University, Finland

In addition, for students who wish to obtain their Bachelors in Physiotherapy, a pathway exists which allows students to complete their three year Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy at IIHS and continue on to their Bachelors in Physiotherapy awarded by Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. 

The Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences – University of Canberra, University of New England and Murdoch University

The Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences, a three year program conducted by IIHS leads to many local and international opportunities. This program has a pathway to many Australian universities, where upon completion of two years at IIHS the student will be able to complete the degree within two years in an Australian University where they will obtain a Bachelors in Biomedical Science or Bachelors in Molecular Biology. The student will then be granted a two year work permit upon a successful graduation in Australia. 



The Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences – Metropolia University, Helsinki, Finland

After completion of their Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences at IIHS, students can also pursue a Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences at the Metropolia University, Helsinki, Finland which can be completed in one year.
