President Maithripala Sirisena has described the proposal by the EU to once again award Sri Lanka the GSP+ scheme as a victory for the Government’s proactive foreign policy.

Economic and political specialists pointed out that the current Government’s foreign policy had led to this development.

During his official visit to Germany, President Sirisena requested German Chancellor Angela Merkel to help get the GSP+ facility provided to Sri Lanka again. The Chancellor agreed to help Sri Lanka in this regard.

Whenever the President met European leaders he drew their attention over the country’s need to reclaim the GSP+ scheme. These leaders pledged to render their support to Sri Lanka for its move towards reconciliation, the protection of human rights and sustainable development through the protection of the rule of law and principles of good governance.

The President expressed his confidence in getting GSP+ relief again at a ceremony held in Kandy recently.

Through obtaining GSP+ relief, the apparel sector in Sri Lanka will make new progress with many benefits to the workers in this sector.
