10 Indian fishermen arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 10 Indian fishermen who were poaching in Sri Lankan waters at two separate locations on Saturday, the Navy media unit said yesterday.

Accordingly, four Indian fishermen, along with a fishing trawler engaged in illegal fishing activities, were apprehended by naval personnel attached to SLNS Thammanna located in Talaimannar belonging to the North Central Naval Command, in the sea north of Talaimannar. 

The apprehended persons and trawler were handed over to the Directorate of Fisheries, Mannar for further action.

On the same night, naval personnel attached to SLNS Elara located in Karainagar in the Northern Naval Command apprehended another six Indian fishermen who were poaching in the sea area north of Delft Island.

Along with the fishermen, a fishing trawler and two unauthorised fishing nets were also taken into custody. The fishermen and items were handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Director for further investigation. (Colombo Gazette)
