Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Sri Chandrababu Naidu yesterday said he strongly believed that Sri Lanka had the potential for a better future while expressing his willingness to work closely with the Government.

He outlined tourism, agriculture, apparel, tea, rice and port-related trade activities as better opportunities for Sri Lanka to capitalise on aspiring for higher economic growth.

Dr. Naidu said Sri Lanka’s leading apparel exporter Brandix had already invested $ 1 million in Andhra Pradesh, adding that there were a few more companies that were interested in investing there, while some firms from India in the sectors of tourism, infrastructure, agriculture and pharmaceutical were keen to explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.

“It is still in the initial stage. We are discussing our strengths. It will be a win-win situation,” he added.

In the wake of a possible power crisis and drought, the Chief Minister said Sri Lanka was seeking assistance in power and water management, noting that a committee had been immediately appointed to conduct a feasibility study on how successful models implemented in Andhra Pradesh could be replicated here.

“There are two requests; one is to replace all street lights with LED bulbs, which will save energy by 40% with immediate effect and the second request was to implement a methodology on ground water availability. A study on the models will be conducted very soon,” he explained.

Dr. Naidu also believes that the adoption of the right technology will help countries to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the UNDP before 2030.

He said that countries should not only focus on prosperity and poverty alleviation but should also concentrate on “happiness” for inclusive growth.

“We must work on happiness and prosperity for all. One has to enjoy life in their capability, which will eventually create more responsible citizens. These are clear-cut targets we are now focusing on in Andhra Pradesh,” Dr. Naidu added.
