The community at S. Thomas’ Preparatory School Kollupitiya, consisting of present students, teachers, parents, Old Boys and well-wishers, will come together on 28 January in an effort to strengthen their already existing bonds of camaraderie to walk and have fun together.

In doing so they are carrying out a noble task of raising the necessary funds to renovate the first building that existed when the school started in 1938 which is called the Fortrose building, which was home to all those who became hostellers in the school.

Prep School, as it is fondly known, has stood out as a close knit family that has catered to all communities and traditions in a way that has helped every child to stand on his feet, blossom and reach great heights. Its uniqueness is that when everyone around is expanding, the school is deliberately keeping itself small in order to ensure quality.

The walk is therefore a walk together and abreast to show the school’s oneness and what it has grown to be and what it is capable of. Galle Face, which is a popular hangout for people from all walks of life, will be the spot from which the walk will commence.

The walk will pass the school along Galle Road to Kollupitiya junction, proceed along Dharmapala Mawatha, turn left at Piththala Junction, proceed along Lester James Peiris Mawatha and reach its final stretch along Perahera Mawatha through Rotunda Gardens to return to the school by the roaring billows. The evening is there for fun and frolic and around 3,000 people are expected to experience the togetherness while indulging in the rides, food and music until midnight.

Students, Old Boys, parents and those who are associated with the school in whatever manner, will indeed walk hand-in-hand and together to take a positive step in initiating an effort which will no doubt see Prep School through to the future.

Past students of Prep School from all walks of life have shown an avid interest in participating in this endeavour and will no doubt be an inspiration to current students who will walk hand-in-hand with those who have been fortunate enough to be a part of this hallowed institution.

The efforts of the Parent Teacher Association and the Old Boys Union have helped create this unforgettable event for every single person who will join in to experience the unique Prep culture of celebrating diversity while holding on to common ideals.

The dawn of 28 January will indeed be a day to remember as the Prepites set foot on a mission to uphold their legacy. The walk will be a step in the right direction.
