Teejay sweeps highest number of Golds at National Business Excellence Awards 2016

Teejay Lanka PLC, the newly-rebranded regional fabric manufacturing giant, shone at the National Business Excellence Awards 2016, the prestigious annual awards ceremony organised by the National Chamber of Commerce.

Teejay came out a winner amongst their peers in the corporate community, ending the night with six Golds and one Silver. 

From among the eight categories being marked in the competition, it won five Gold awards in the categories; Excellence in Corporate Governance, Excellence in Local Market Reach, Excellence in Performance Management, Excellence in Capacity Building and Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility.  

Teejay’s Silver award was for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability and the company also bagged the Gold award for the Apparel, Textile and Leather Products Sector, adding up to its total of seven awards. 

Teejay Managing Director and CEO Sriyan de Silva Wijeyeratne, commending his team on the win, said: “The breadth of awards won was a clear demonstration that we have come a very long way as a company. To excel not just in one or two aspects, but all round is no mean fete and I congratulate our team on this outstanding performance. The National Business Excellence Awards 2016 held at the Hilton Colombo had Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, Governor of the Central Bank, as Chief Guest, as well as a host of key corporate personalities in attendance.    

 The judging criteria of the National Business Excellence Awards is based mainly on the formula used by the European Federation of Quality Management (EFQM), the standard for Europe, as well as some criterion taken from the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Awards of the USA. The National Chamber of Commerce has formulated its National Business Excellence Awards by combining the standards of both Business Excellence models and coming up with one that is best suited for Sri Lanka’s corporate sector.  

Teejay was recently named amongst Forbes 2016 Asia’s best 200 companies under a billion list, bringing honour to Sri Lanka and the textile industry at large. The company is also placed amongst the top 30 local entities picked by ‘Business Today.’  

Formerly known as Textured Jersey, the company consolidated its Indian and Sri Lankan operations under their new identity ‘Teejay,’ announcing it to the public recently. 

The CEO said the NBEA win would be another landmark that would inspire their forward journey. “We thank the NBEA for the honours bestowed on Teejay, as it spurs us on to bigger successes and helps up to stay ahead of our game by being closer to our customer.”
