Randev to fight for gold at Asian Karate Championships

untitled-2Winner of the South Asian Gold Medallion in Karate in 2016, Sri Lankan Randev Athukorala will fight at the Asian Karate Championships in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Athukorala (15) captained the Sri Lankan cadet karate team for the South Asian games in New Delhi early last month and overcame resistance from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh’s number ones to win the Gold Medal. His opponents at the Asian Championships will be from 24 countries including the top rank from China, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

A product of St. Peters College, Randev Athukorala has been a 4th year member of the school’s Karate Tournament and is a silver medallion winner at the coveted Malaysian Milo Karate Championship, a gold medallion winner at the Iranian World karate championship, a gold medallion winner at the Nepal National Karate Championship and a silver medallion winner at the Asia Cup championship staged in Malaysian while also winning many awards at local competitions.

Athukorala won ‘Best Player’ at the ‘Colours Night’ of St. Peters College for two consecutive years.

He is trained by former Sri Lanka karate champion D. M. D. Nimal and managed by his father black belt Dr. Rohantha Athukorala. Karate is the second most popular sport in Sri Lanka and has been included in the 2020 Olympic Games.
