MAS opened a fresh chapter in its history by officially acquiring intellectual property which was researched and created by a Sri Lankan institute yesterday.

The technology is a result of one and a half years of research and development conducted by SLINTEC, and was conceptualised to create superior drying rates for sportswear fabric through a high tech functional coating.

This research project undertaken by SLINTEC, funded by MAS, has resulted in an outstanding solution with built-in simplicity of application which makes it economically viable.

Since its launch in 2012, MAS has partnered with globally progressive academic institutes, organisations, start-ups and customers to explore new areas in the technological manufacturing space as well as industries connected to apparel.

MAS has constantly sought to differentiate itself through innovation led by R&D. The company works with over 30 universities globally, including top tier universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. MAS also focuses on Sri Lankan high tech research institutes utilising the local talent pool to facilitate faster scientific discoveries. This thinking led to partnerships with other interested private sector companies and the Sri Lankan Government in the establishment of SLINTEC in 2008.

Speaking at the signing of the MoU, MAS Holdings Chief Technology Officer Ranil Vitarana stated: “We would like to thank Prof. Nalin De Silva and his team for their hard work and ingenuity. We are excited to continue our work with SLINTEC as well as other local research institutes and universities to bring innovative products to the market and enhance Sri Lanka’s technological research capabilities.

We must use our local capabilities to position Sri Lanka as a hub in this sphere.”

Addressing the media, Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology Chief Executive Officer Harin de Silva Wijeyeratne stated: “The partnership fostered with MAS over the past 18 months has resulted in new technology in moisture management. We filed a patent in the United States earlier this year, and today it is being acquired by our partner, MAS.”

MAS Holdings is a 1.6 billion apparel manufacturer, which matches trusted industry experience with cutting-edge expertise. Headquartered in Sri Lanka, MAS Holdings’ manufacturing footprint comprises 60 state-of-the-art facilities located in 15 countries while employing over 83,500 associates.

SLINTEC is a public-private partnership between the Government and five private companies namely Brandix, Dialog, Hayleys, Loadstar and MAS Holdings. SLINTEC is committed to supporting local industries to improve and develop their products to meet the demands of the international markets, using nanotechnology and other advanced technological solutions.
