SLRFU looks to shorten club rugby league’s second round

The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), which will be rechristened Sri Lanka Rugby at its next Annual General Meeting (AGM), will be meeting all ‘A’ Division clubs soon in order to get the green light to shorten the second round of the 2016/2017 club rugby season. 

This is being done in order to prepare the national rugby Sevens outfit ahead of the Cathay Pacific HSBC World Rugby Sevens qualifiers which will take place alongside the World Series in Hong Kong in April next year.

The eight-team club event is very likely to see its second round shortened, with the top three to four teams playing in the Cup segment while the other four teams will play in the Plate category. The SLRFU is also looking to send the Sevens outfit to Dubai in order for it to get more exposure before the team’s Hong Kong tour. If the SLRFU gets a majority nod for its plan then the club season will be over by mid-February.
