Sri Lankan artisans at Chennai Crafts Bazaar

A team of 11 Sri Lankan artisans participated at the Chennai Crafts Bazaar last week, alongside 100 Indian crafts persons. 

The programme was organised by Hands of Sri Lanka – National Crafts Foundation President Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena in collaboration with Daskari Haat Samithi of Delhi led by Jay Jeitty.

The Crafts Bazaar was organised at the Kalakshetra Foundation grounds in Thiruwanmiyur, Chennai. The opening ceremony was held with the attendance of Sri Lanka’s Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai Krishnamoorthy, Jay Jeitty and Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena and the Director of the Kalakshetra Foundation.

Sri Lankan Designer Senaka Silva conducted a traiing and new design development programme with Sri Lankan and Indian artisans, which became a very popular event at the bazaar.

Sri Lankan artisans showcased wooden elephants, clay jewellery, masks, lace, rush and reed, handloom, bamboo, children’s play and puzzle items and batiks and tie and dye.

The project was coordinated in Chennai by Manohari Hewage and Sri Lankan artisan stalls were sponsored by the National Lotteries Board and Development Lottery.
