International Lean Transformation Summit 2016: ‘Inculcating Lean Thinking for Better Tomorrow’

Institute of Lean Management (ILM), flagship event, The International Lean Transformation Summit will be held on 27 and 28 September at the Grand Ballroom – Galadari Hotel Colombo. Lean Transformation Summit is organised by ILM for the second time and this year’s theme is ‘Inculcating Lean Thinking for Better Tomorrow’. International presenters from United Kingdom, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, China and India will deliver presentations related to service excellence, hospitality management excellence, manufacturing and healthcare, food and beverage industries. 



1 ILM, Sri Lanka CEO Thilak Pushpakumara

Keynote speaker – ‘The importance of Lean thinking for Sri Lanka’ 

Thilak Pushpakumara is the CEO/MD of ILM and the founder of the Institute of Lean Management Ltd., a corporate trainer, TPM and Lean Management Consultant who is Lean certified from University of Michigan – USA. 

He is a Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) accredited Total Productive Maintenance and Management (TPM) Instructor, certified Lean Master Black Belt and a certified trainer and facilitator on gaining change skills by Spenser Johnson Partners, USA. Thilak has been intensively trained in Japan on TPM, TQM, TPS and Company Wide Problem Solving and also has been trained on lean manufacturing at University of Michigan, MI, USA, and lean supply chain, lean in service organisation and lean in sales at Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI), USA and Len Enterprise Academy, UK. 

He was trained by DuPont Safety Resources, USA on Managing Safety Systems that work for operations managers with audit training and also on train the trainer by internationally acclaimed Bob Pike Group, USA. He was former Plant Manager – Unilever Sri Lanka and former General Manager – Productivity Development and Training and Development Loadstar Ltd.

2Management Director/Chairman Prof. Ajantha Dharmasiri 

Panellist – Topic: ‘Organisational Transformation and Challenges’

Prof. Ajantha also serves as an adjunct professor in International Human Resource Management at the Price College of Business, University of Oklahoma, USA. 

He recently won the prestigious IPM Lifetime Gold Award 2014, the highest honour for an HR professional in Sri Lanka.

He has over two decades of both private and public sector working experience in diverse environments. He has engaged in consultancies in more than fourteen countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Prof. Ajantha is a fellow member of the Sri Lanka Institute of Training and Development (SLITAD) and a member of the governing council of the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) Sri Lanka. He also functions as a vice president of the Sri Lankan Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP) and an advisor to the Old Royalists’ HR Professional Association (ORHRPRA).

Panellist – Topic: ‘Organisational Transformation and Challenges’

Felix holds Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Business Management (Special), and a MBA from the Post Graduate Institute of Management (PIM) and a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA), UK.

Felix is a Director of the Board of the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel (SLITA) and a member of the Academic Council of SLITA, and a Member of the Advisory Board of Benedict XVI Cultural Institute (BCI), a higher education institute affiliated to the Aquinas College. Currently he is the Deputy Chairman of Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association (SLAEA) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Joint Apparel Executive Forum (JAFF).

‘Lean Application in Chinese Manufacturing Industries’

Justin started his 13+ year’s Lean journey at Toyota before moving to Otis Elevators and Kraft Foods. He gained a strong grounding in lean management systems, including the Toyota Production System and the UTC ACE program, which he then applied in his next role as a full time lean consultant at Alstom to help to establish their own Lean system – HMC (Hydro Manufacturing system). 

As a TXM Lean consultant he is working with global companies including Airbus, DMG Mori, Festo, Saint Gobain, Sandvik, Philips, Novozymes, AstraZeneca, Beckers, Kimberly-Clark, Sony and Gerflor. 

Justin has translated well-known lean books including The Machine That Changed World, Getting the Right Things Done and Lean Solutions in to Chinese, as well as developing e learning material on Lean Basic – TPM for Lean Enterprise China.

Amit is the Principal Consultant and Lean Vertical Head at the Total Quality Management Institute (TQMI). He holds a Post Graduate in Marketing Management and Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Has over 21 years of rich experience in field of Business Excellence and Six Sigma, Supply Chain Management and Sourcing, B2B and Institutional Sales and Business Partner Management.

Amit is Six Sigma MBB from Motorola University, a double certified Six Sigma Black Belt from GE & LG Electronics and a Certified Lean Practitioner Coach. He is an accomplished trainer and his effective coaching and training skills coupled with an ability of seeing the big picture and his people management capabilities have supported him to drive results and success.

‘Deploying the Holistic Six Sigma Business Strategy’

Azman is a passionate continuous improvement practitioner for more than 18 years who contributed to the knowledge and growth of hundreds of individuals. He is an American Society for Quality (ASQ) – certified Six Sigma, Black Belt, and is a certified master Black Belt from lean Applied, an ASQ affiliate service provider. Azman Shah has had extensive consulting experience with involvement in PETRONS refinery Melaka and Kuantan, Malaysia Airport Berhad and Sime Darby Group where he shared his knowledge in Lean six sigma methodology, lean manufacturing, Kaizen, VSM, TPM, and 5S deployments initiatives. To his credit 175 champions, 5 master Black Belt, 97 Black Belt and 350 Green Belts from various industries have been coached by him.

Dhammika Welhenge is a Chemical and Process Engineer from the University of Moratuwa and a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka. Dhammika has received the license from Du Pont as a behaviour Based Safety Trainer. He has been certified as an Accredited Safety Program Auditor by DNV. He is also certified as an EMS auditor. Dhammika has been a visiting lecturer for more than two decades in the department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa to share his vast practical experience with the upcoming engineers.

Dr. Wimal Karandagoda; a senior medical administrator in Sri Lanka, obtained his MBBS from the Medical School of the University of Peradeniya and Master of Medical Administration from The Post Graduate Institute of Medicine; University of Colombo.

He is a scholar of the Health Services Management Centre of the University of Birmingham; United Kingdom where he has obtained his basic training in Health Planning and Management in 1990. 

Dr. Karandagoda is trained in Manila; Philippines and Malaysia in 2003 and 2006 as a Productivity specialist, conducted by the Asian Productivity Organisation. He is a founder member of the College of Medical Administrators of Sri Lanka.

‘First Lean Luxury Hotel’ 

Upon completing his higher education, Terrence Fernando joined the John Keells Group in 1982, starting off in inbound tour operations. He served a total of 15 years in destination management, prior to re-joining John Keells in the hotels division. He has now completed over 12 years in hotels, both in sales and marketing, and hotel operations, specialising in Rooms Division. In 2013, he was entrusted with the pre-opening of South East Asia’s first lean luxury hotel, Cinnamon Red Colombo, where he now functions as its General Manager.

 ‘TPM Case Study’ 

Manone holds a MBA (Merit Pass), University of Colombo and a BSc (1st Class Honors), Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. He is specialised in project management, environmental auditing, total productive maintenance (TPM), performance focused maintenance (PFM), mission directed work teams (MDWT), total quality management (TQM), preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies. He was responsible for driving TPM strategy and processes across the Coca-Cola SABCO plants in the Asian and African regions. 

Manone is currently a visiting lecturer in the Masters in Manufacturing Management Degree Program conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo. He lectures on the subject Total Quality Manufacturing (TQM).

Duminda Sasanapala graduated from University of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Australia, with a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.sc) degree in Textile Technology. He holds an advance diploma in Manufacturing Management from National Institute of Business Management (NIBM), and is a diploma holder in Clothing Manufacturing and Technology from the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel in Sri Lanka (SLITA). He has more than 15 years of hands on experience in apparel industry. He is an expert in Lean Manufacturing, certified TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) practitioner and certified “A” grade license holder in GSD and GCD by GSD co-operation Ltd. in United Kingdom.
