Taranjit Singh Sandhu next Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who is India’s deputy chief of mission in Washington, is headed to Sri Lanka as the new High Commissioner succeeding Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha, who has completed his term.

Sandhu, with a distinguished career spanning over 28 years after joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1988, has previously served in Sri Lanka as the Head of the Political Department in the High Commission of India, Colombo from December 2000-September 2004.

Prior to taking charge of his responsibilities in Washington D.C., Ambassador Sandhu was Consul General of India in Frankfurt from September 2011-July 2013. He has served in the Ministry of External Affairs from March 2009-August 2011, as Joint Secretary (United Nations) and later as Joint Secretary (Administration) heading the Human Resource Department Division.

Ambassador Sandhu was at the Permanent Mission of India to United Nations, New York (July 2005-February 2009), where he was India’s delegate to UN Committee on Peacekeeping, the UN Committee on Information and the UN Committee on Decolonisation.

Born on 23 January 1963, he did his schooling at The Lawrence School, Sanawar and graduated with History Honors from St. Stephens’ college, Delhi. Ambassador Sandhu has a Masters degree in International Relations at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Ambassador Sandhu is married to Reenat Sandhu, also an IFS officer, and has two children.
