The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRP) yesterday requested the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to formulate the necessary regulations for the internal market for all cosmetic products.

Writing to CAA Director General A.K.D.D Arandara, NMCRP said: “We urging you to initiate prompt action to make the necessary regulation as a body responsible for the protection of consumers’ rights.”

NMCRP also claimed the CAA had failed to gazette any regulation and that even the internal cosmetics market was controlled by smugglers.

“We observed that the CAA was empowered by the Finance Ministry to make regulations to regulate the cosmetics market, but it failed to gazette any such regulations as per the directive, permitting unscrupulous traders to exploit innocent buyers,” it stated.

The NMCRP urged the CAA to implement the 2016 Budget proposal No. 527, which pledged to issue a gazette notification to regulate the cosmetics market.
