CAHM welcomes Rishi Desai

Providing local and international students with a 100% Australian qualification, the Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management (CAHM) is in partnership with William Angliss Institute (WAI), Melbourne. Based at the SLIIT campus in Malabe, the Academy is at a fast pace at producing ‘Career Ready’ graduates. 

Due to the strong relationships CAHM has maintained with the industry and other prestigious organisations, the students benefit through events held at the Academy as they are able to follow workshops conducted by guest lecturers, and also gather important contacts for their future. 

CAHM partnered with Trekurious Sri Lanka in order to carry out a workshop and Masterclass conducted by Masterchef Australia Season 5 contestant Rishi Desai at the Academy itself on 14 July. As Rishi explained to the students of his experience during his time in the competition, he said that his love for food and cooking grew as he kept learning more every day. 

His one lesson that he left with the Diploma students who greatly benefited from this workshop, was to always know ‘Why’ you need to incorporate certain methods when executing a dish – there is always a reason behind everything and it is our duty to find out what it is. 

Rishi Desai then progressed to a demonstration of making a different type of a hopper rather than the conventional ones we see, it was called the Sunrise with Egg Hopper and also a Curried Mussel Soup. 

Inspired initially by his mother, Rishi admits that the six months he spent at the Masterchef Australia house is the reason for his success. 

Our students were greatly educated about his experiences and how he has acquired success in the culinary field. 

Under the supervision of Chef Kapila Jayanetti and Chef Samantha Surene, the students of the Diploma batch prepared a four-course meal for Rishi and the Trekurios Team; a theme that highlighted Sri Lankan stage dramas such as Nari Bana, Maname and SInhabahu were incorporated. The students dressed up as the relevant characters and served the guests. The dishes presented on that day were unique and one of a kind as they were Sri Lankan flavours with a fancy twist! 

CAHM CEO Bradie-Miles stated, “Part of my role is that we replicate the William Angliss curriculum, introducing the exact same celebrity chef program to CAHM will be one of the highlights of a student’s academic life here at CAHM. The students are not only exposed to the curriculum, they will be exposed to other cultures. With my connection from Melbourne, I have the benefit of linking our students with many iconic dignitaries from down under!”
