Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Faizer Mustapha yesterday said Local Government elections will be held before the next Sinhala and Tamil New Year in 2017.

Speaking at a media briefing he projected the ongoing delimitation process will end by April next year.

Commenting on the completed terms of 23 Local Government bodies, Mustapha said those institutions will be handed over to special commissioners and secretaries until the election is declared.  When reporters argued the disadvantages of commissioner-based supervision in Local Government bodies, Mustapha responded those commissioners were experts in administration and it would not be an issue for the smooth flow of duties.

“No institution has yet found difficulties due to commissioner administration, and they are operating as they did before. However, some opposition groups try to spread rumors about them,” he said. (CG)
