SLT Mobitel partners Colombo Dockyard for state-of-the-art vehicle detection system

Sri Lanka’s national mobile service provider SLT Mobitel has entered into a partnership with Colombo Dockyard PLC to implement a fully-fledged Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based Vehicle Movement Detection System for Colombo Dockyard vehicles. This state-of-the-art solution will assist Colombo Dockyard in automating and streamlining one of their key daily administrative tasks of monitoring the IN/OUT movement of vehicles.

The Vehicle Movement Detection System (VMDS) is an enterprise grade solution fully designed and implemented by SLT Mobitel Business Solutions on behalf of Colombo Dockyard. VMDS is an enhanced version of a RFID based tag detection solution to track the IN/OUT movements of vehicles in premises by using a ultra-high frequency (UHF) tag that can be pasted or mounted on a vehicle and compatible UHF readers are installed at gates that could accurately identify fast moving objects. 

The associated back-end system monitors and records the data received from the RFID readers in real-time for easy retrieval and viewing purposes. Due to the high performance nature of vehicle mounted UHF Tags and UHF interrogators installed at gates, the system would be capable of detecting multiple fast moving vehicles even at speeds of 60 km/h range. The RFID system has been designed to work in isolation, even with a total network outage, which ensures 100% independence between network connectivity and system functionality.

Colombo Dockyard Information and Communication Technology Development Manager P.H.S. Daminda stated, “This Vehicle Movement Detection System aided us not only in optimising one of our key operational activities, it gave us the opportunity to upgrade our technology infrastructure at Colombo Dockyard. Our environment is unique and not every solution works fine. However, Mobitel were very much positive in their approach and conducted a detailed analysis which resulted in a well-suited, customised solution that we can depend on.”
