Revamped Old Benedictines’ Sports Club to be unveiled

The soft opening of the revamped Old Benedictines’ Sports Club, Rev. Bro. Alban Patrick Club House will take place on Saturday, 4 June at 7.00 p.m.

The OBSC, which was inaugurated in 1958, now under the Presidency of Malsiri Perera, commenced the refurbishment project on 20 February, encouraged by the initial donation received from the Old Bens, Toronto Branch, Canada.

As donations and sponsorships subsequently poured into the coffers from the local old bens, the club house got a new ceiling, better illumination, new furniture, a new projector with a drop down screen, CCTV, and upgraded toilet facilities.

In 1931, Rev. Luke Gregory, who was an old boy of the college and was the brother of Rt. Rev. Dr. Emilianus Pillai, Bishop of Jaffna and Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai, Rector of St. Joseph’s College, Darley Road, and was the first Ceylonese director of the college, acquired a marshy grass field off Bloemendhal Road and initiated the work of filling and leveling it to make the playground that St. Benedict’s College long needed. Up to that time, the playground was the pint-sized college quadrangular.

In 1957, then Director, Rev. Bro. Alban Patrick donated the upper floor of the college ground pavilion for the use of the old boys.

After the blessing of the premises the portraits of Rev. Bro. Luke Gregory and Rev. Bro. Alban Patrick will be unveiled; followed by a fellowship dinner.
