Germany to provide Euro 1m as humanitarian aid

The German Government will provide financial support of Euro 1 million (around Rs. 164 million) for flood and landsliderelief efforts in the aftermath of the recent natural disaster. The funds will be used to meet the priorityneeds of people affected by the crisis.

Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the aim is to help those most in need.

Germany will not only help Sri Lanka in the short-term with this natural disaster, but will do its utmostto support and foster medium-term development in the course of its ongoing cooperation.

“Germany’s thoughts are with all who have lost loved ones and seen their homes and livelihoodsswept away,” said Dr. Michael Dohmen, Deputy Head of Mission.

The funding will form part of the international support for Sri Lanka and will be disbursed incoordination with the Government of Sri Lanka and aid organisations in the country. Relief andrecovery measures are currently being planned based on identified priority needs.

In addition, with Euro 43 million in 2015 and at least Euro 50 millionin 2016, Germany is one of thebiggest contributors to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The CERFmechanisms will also support those most affected by the floods and landslides in Sri Lanka.
