Laugfs Gas back in business

• Dispatches 15,000 cylinders, back at usual biz from today
• Group MD says no major loss, total damage yet to be assessed No LGP shortage

Sri Lanka’s energy conglomerate Laugfs Gas PLC yesterday confirmed that the firm had recommenced usual operations as of yesterday, dispatching 15,000 LPG cylinders to the market.

“Things are completely under control. We managed to dispatch about 15,000 cylinders today (23) and by tomorrow (24) morning we will be in our usual business dispatching 20,000 cylinders,” LAUGFS Group Managing Director Thilak De Silva told the Daily FT.

After days of heavy rains, raging waters of the Kelani River invaded the LAUGFS Gas facility in Mabima, with empty gas cylinders pictured floating at the premises.

Noting that there were no major losses reported in the facility, he said they were yet to assess the total damage.

“Only the cylinders were floating as they were filled with gas. Since these cylinders are made with many safety features, we can assure that there were no damages to the cylinders. What we need to do is weigh and wash the cylinders as they are ready to be dispatched,” de Silva explained. 

He pointed out that the firm was able to emerge from the crisis within a short span of time, when no other company in the area had thought of commencing usual operations. Hence, he commended the team spirit of the LAUGFS family for their commitment and support.

Asked if there were any LPG shortages, he said: “Not really.”
