Completely vegan experience every Poya at Mount Lavinia Hotel

Celebrating 210 years of history and colonial heritage, Mount Lavinia Hotel has been a leader in introducing culinary trends to Sri Lanka. With the focus of promoting healthy eating, MLH commenced a Vegetarian Buffet for Lunch every Poya Day about 10 years ago, a novel initiative at the time. Taking a step further, the Poya Lunch Buffet is now presented as a completely vegan experience, without any animal products used neither in preparation nor presentation.6

With the increasing interest on healthy living and widespread awareness on sustainably sourced products, Mount Lavinia Hotel’s is a timely initiative. Guests can indulge on a completely ‘guilt-free’ experience that will leave them feeling healthy, satisfied and nourished. The talented team of chefs at Mount Lavinia Hotel has given detailed attention to each dish on offer during the course of preparation. 

The international spread including Sri Lankan, Western, Chinese and Indian dishes, are all crafted accordingly. Even the desserts which is usually the interloper for healthy food, is not spared. The textures are obtained with the use of agar-agar instead of gelatin, and natural products are used for flavour and colour.

Commenting on the creation of this specialty menu, Executive Chef Kirthi Senevirathne stated, “Riding on the success of our vegetarian buffet every Poya Day from inception, we wanted to expand the experience further by transforming it into a Vegan buffet. It was no easy task and we have been having trial runs throughout the past few months. With the research, hard work and creativity of our team, led by Sous Chef Garde-Manger Chef Amarasena, we have succeeded in providing one of the healthiest and nourishing meals to our guests.”

The Poya Day Vegan buffet has also received the endorsement of the Good Market community for developing a Good Market approved menu that is all natural, vegan and contains locally sourced ingredients. “The Mount Lavinia Hotel kitchens have a strong history of providing healthy, local, and organic options.  When Prince Charles celebrated his birthday in Sri Lanka in 2013, it was Mount Lavinia Hotel that made the organic birthday cake.  The Good Market community is very happy to see Mount Lavinia Hotel expanding their range of all-natural, vegan food.  Not only is the Vegan Poya Day buffet delicious, it’s also good for our health, our communities, and our planet.  A cruelty-free vegan meal is a great way to celebrate Poya,” added Dr. Amanda Kiessel.
