Sri Lanka-German Training Institute now open for registrations

The Sri Lanka-German Training Institute (SLGTI) located in Kilinochchi (north of Sri Lanka) is now open for student registrations. This Centre of Excellence, which will open for its inaugural batch of students on 18 July, will offer youth in the North, East and across Sri Lanka an opportunity to further their knowledge and skills through vocational training to become self-sufficient and ready for gainful employment. The SLGTI curriculum meets the highest German vocational training standards, and will provide vocational training for 620 students when it opens.

The institute will function under the purview of the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA) while GIZ will be responsible for providing technical assistance including capacity development, provision of qualified managerial staff, teachers and trainers for SLGTI. The German development bank – KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) has provided financial assistance for the construction of the training centre, supply of equipment, and teaching materials. 

The institute will offer vocational training programs to young people, thereby enabling them to acquire higher levels of qualification in accordance with the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) framework, thus ensuring that the existing demands of the Sri Lankan labour market are met and these students find suitable employment or self-employment.

 Students who have completed their G.C.E. O/Level and A/L level examinations, and have studied up to NVQ Level 3 or 4, can enter the institute to continue their training up to NVQ levels 4, 5 and 6 in five key areas – construction technology, automobile technology, food processing technology, electrical and electronics technology, and mechanical engineering. A German principal appointed by GIZ will oversee the day-to-day running of the institute for the first three years, working together with a Sri Lankan principal to set up the necessary systems, procedures and processes for the SLGTI. 

SLGTI has been built on a 15-acre land, and includes dormitory facilities for up to 145 students and staff, a well-developed English Resource Centre, sports facilities including a vast ground, and a kindergarten/day care facility for young parents studying at the Institute. In keeping with the Institute’s efforts in creating equal opportunities, all buildings are accessible to the differently-abled, ensuring that training is not just for the youth who are mobile, and active, but anyone who is interested in gaining vocational qualifications.
