download-copyLeader of the Opposition and major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R. Sampanthan has called on the Tamil diaspora to take part in the development of the North and East.

The Opposition Leader made this request while participating in a ceremony to open a community centre in the Thennamarawadi area of Trincomalee District built with the assistance from the Tamil diaspora in Australia, BBC Sinhala Service reported.

Sampanthan said large-scale development plans in some areas of the North and East including Trincomalee can provide employment for the youth in the areas. “Experts in Singapore are showing special interest regarding the development plans and preparing the plans,” he said adding that the plans are expected to be put forward before the end of the year.

He said the Tamil Diaspora can also invest in these development activities, open factories and contribute to employment opportunities for the youth.

The Opposition Leader also stressed that a political solution is essential to overcome the economic abyss the country is currently facing.

“A political solution is needed for the whole country, not just for us. This country needs a political solution to save it from the debts. Some malicious parties are trying to complicate it. Even our people, without a clear understanding, are working selfishly to gain political advantage,” the Opposition Leader said.
