The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) on Thursday demanded all provincial councils to follow Western Provincial Council’s (WPC) move to pass a proposal opposing the Federal solution adopted by the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) recently.

Speaking at a media briefing JHU Leader Omalpe Sobitha Thera claimed he was wondering why the Central Government and other provincial councils were keeping quiet over such a ‘controversial proposal’ made by Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran.

“Wigneswaran has demanded a separate state combined of Northern and Eastern provinces and that state will be limited for Tamil people. We could not admit it because it will drive the country to another civil war,” the Thera noted.

Sobitha Thera charged some politicians were trying to implement their own narrow political agendas by stimulating separatism among Sinhalese and Tamil people.

“I believe Sri Lankan Tamils do not have any issue with other communities. They have similar problems which Sinhalese people have such as low income, unemployment and health issues. They all have equal rights provided by the Constitution,” the Thera stated.

Sobitha Thera further stressed the Government should announce its response as soon as possible over the Federal proposal passed by the NPC, to maintain the peace inside the country.

The Thera added he would like to appreciate Provincial Councillor Nishantha Warnasinghe who proposed the opposing proposal to the WPC, as well as all the political parties who supported this.
