Access Engineering PLC which has long been a catalyst of growth in the telecommunication infrastructure development sector is currently engaged in the deployment of an optical fibre backbone network and an optical fibre sprouts connectivity project for Dialog Broadband Networks Ltd. 6

Dialog Broadband Networks is a subsidiary of Dialog Axiata PLC, one of the Sri Lanka’s largest telecommunication operators has made a forward investment with the deployment of a National Optical Fibre Backbone Network and Optical Fibre Sprout Connectivity Project with the intention of enhancing internet penetration levels and introduction of state-of-art wireless technology for broadband internet delivery.

The scope of the said projects includes planning, obtaining approvals, supply and installation of cables and accessories, testing and commissioning of optical fibre circuits. 

The National Optical Fibre Backbone Network Project is being implemented in several phases and Phase I to III have already been completed and in operation. Under Phase IV, a total of around 215 km of cables were installed and successfully commissioned by Access Engineering, which covers the backbone route segments of Mawanella-Kiribathkumbura up to Padeniya, Urapola-Nittambuwa, Kesbewa-Waskaduwa, and Avissawella-Sankapala. Subsequently Optical Fibre Backbone Phase V was launched to install a cable network of 61 km from Jaffna to Molankawil along the A32 road. 

The Optical Fibre Sprouts Connectivity Project involves the supply of services related to the deployment of Dialog optical fibre network in urban areas and the project is being carried out across the island installing an approximate total of 200 km of fibre cables. 

“The coordination between the utility agencies, road authorities, and general public was extremely challenging and executing work in urban areas became a tough task when the cables are required to be installed underground along the busy roads. Yet the horizontal directional drilling technology employed by the company assured the work progressed with minimum damage to the road surfaces and least disturbances to the traffic and pedestrians,” said Deputy General Manager Prabashana Kumara, who handles the telecommunication infrastructure projects of Access Engineering.
