The Colombo Port has achieved its highest-ever daily handling of 22,422 TEUs on 9 February, surpassing the previous best of 22,186 recorded on 28 April last year.

The Ministry of Ports and Shipping said yesterday the recorded volume handled was from 22 vessels on a single day, 10 of which serviced by Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Out of 22,422 TEUs, SLPA terminals had handled 9,875 TEUs or 44%.

In a statement Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga was quoted as saying plans were underway to introduce overall development in Colombo Port.

He said the plan would be developed while keeping the uniqueness of the (Jaya Container Terminal) JCT terminal operated by the SLPA.

“Colombo Port operations are carried under three terminals. JCT is run by SLPA and the other two terminals are owned by the private sector. We hope to introduce a strategic business plan for all these terminals to carry out their business operations towards the overall development of Colombo Port,” Ranatunga said.

The Ministry said in January 2016, SLPA volume increased by 3.6% to 197, 228 TEUs.
