Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga on Tuesday called for an open debate in a bid to resolve ports and maritime related issues.

The Minister emphasised the need for reforms in port and maritime related regulations and policies, noting that they need to be up-to-date to meet current requirements of the sector.

He made these remarks addressing the first meeting of Inter-Agency Coordination Committee on Ports, Shipping and Maritime Affairs held at the Ministry.

The Inter-Agency Coordination Committee on Ports, Shipping and Maritime Affairs was set up with Cabinet approval to formulate and review policies, programs and projects relating to ports, shipping and maritime sectors. It also coordinates consultancy between different stakeholders that fall under the portfolio of the ministry.

Noting the first meeting was concluded successfully Ranatunga pointed out the committee should provide a great platform to discuss inter-agency issues and provide solutions.

“We hope to meet once a month to discuss the problems and provide quick solutions to our stakeholders,” he noted.

Ports and Shipping Ministry Secretary L.P. Jayampathi noted establishing an inter-agency coordination committee was recognised as a necessity by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

“On an average 4,500 vessels per annum are called at Colombo port and other ports islandwide and it is increasing gradually. Hence, proper inter-agency coordination is paramount to provide quality service,” he pointed out.
