Defence Secretary briefs EU Parliamentary delegation on progress of military matters

An EU Parliamentary delegation, led by Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Friends of Sri Lanka Group Geoffrey Van Orden, and including MEP Morten Messerschmidt, met the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Karunasena Hettiarachchi at the Ministry premises on Tuesday (9).

During the meeting cordial discussions were held on issues related to development in Sri Lanka since January 2015, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

Defence Secretary Hettiarachchi explained to the delegates the progress that has been made in release of lands previously used by the military for civilian use, development of defence policy in the context of peace, demining efforts, rehabilitation of ex-combatants and the lifting of travel restrictions to the North and East among other matters.

Senior MOD officials were also present during the meeting.
