As a part of its initiative to broad-base management accountancy education in the country, the Institute of Certified Management Accountants, (CMA) of Sri Lanka recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) of the University of Sabaragamuwa.  Similar MoUs with several other public universities and the CMA are already in operation.  DFT-10-01Vice President of CMA Sri Lanka Basheer Ismail (left) presents the MOU certificate to Vice Chancellor  University of Sabaragamuwa Prof. Chandana P. Udawatta .

The MoU will provide the opportunity for graduates and undergraduates of the degree programs conducted by the Faculty of Management Studies of the University of Sabaragamuwa to obtain exemptions when they register for CMA examinations.  This would enable the students to become academically and professionally qualified simultaneously, increase their value and open more doors for them when they are ready to enter the employment market.  The exemption scheme has already been deliberated and agreed upon by both parties.

The carefully designed MoU is mutually beneficial and constructive to the management accounting and financial education in Sri Lanka.  It allows academics from the University of Sabragamuwa to draw advanced and contemporary knowledge from workshops, seminars and international academic and professional events organised by CMA to develop the quality of their teaching.  CMA study programs, workshops and seminars would be enriched by the knowledge and expertise of University academics.

Several other important clauses with regard to scholarships and joint research programs with the university are included in the MoU and will be beneficial to the undergraduates.

The MoU was signed at a simple ceremony held at the University of Sabaragamuwa.  Vice Chancellor Prof. Chandana P Udawatta together with several Heads of Departments were present at the signing ceremony on behalf of the University of Sabaragamuwa while CMA Sri Lanka was represented by Vice President M B Ismail and other high ranking officials.
