Australia extends support to Sri Lanka’s fisheries industry

 Australia has agreed to support development and maintenance of  Sri Lanka’s fisheries industry on a “sound footing,” the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources says.

An Australian trade delegation headed by Australian Trade Commissioner Grayson Perry recently held a meeting with the Minster of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Mahinda Amaraweera at the Ministry in Colombo.

At the discussion, the Australian Trade Commissioner has agreed to extend support to provide the necessary knowledge and training, on the methods and ways followed by Australia, to the officers of the Ministry of Fisheries and to the officers of the institutions coming under the Fisheries Ministry and to conduct and maintain the fisheries industry in Sri Lanka, on a sound footing.

Minister Amaraweera, extending his appreciation to the Australian delegation team for the enthusiasm shown for the development of the Fisheries Industry in Sri Lanka, gave instructions to the officers of the Fisheries Department, NARA Institute and the National Aquaculture Development Authority to discuss with the Australian Trade Commission, the subjects on which technological co-operation could be extended between the two countries.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries W.M.M.R. Adikari, the Adviser of the Australian High Commission Charlotte Blundell, Chairman of the Nara Institute Dr. Anil Premaratne and several others participated in the discussions.
