United National Party (UNP) MP Wadiwel Suresh who threatened to set himself on fire if plantation workers were not given a wage hike,  yesterday expressed his regret to the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

He apologised to the Speaker regarding his statement as well as attempts to bring cans of kerosene oil into the Parliament premises, and  promised such misbehaviour would not be repeated by him.

He further requested permission to issue a statement to the media expressing his regret regarding the incident.

Meanwhile,  Speaker Jayasuriya had ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms and the Parliament Police Division to submit separate reports over the incident, so as to initiate disciplinary action against MP Suresh.

Suresh threatened to set himself on fire on 18 December and attempted to bring two kerosene oil cans of four litres each the following day. However Parliament Police prevented his attempts.
