Root rested, Moeen and Woakes recalled

ESPNCricinfo: Joe Root will not play for England again this season after being rested from the one-off T20 and one-day series against Australia.

Moeen Ali has been recalled to both squads after missing the series against New Zealand while Chris Woakes also returns after injury. There is no place for Jonny Bairstow in either squad despite his match-winning innings against New Zealand earlier in the season when he came in for the deciding game at Chester-le-Street and struck an unbeaten 83.

The absence of Root is understandable given his workload - only two players have made more international appearances than him since January 2012. After the one-day matches against Australia, England travel to the UAE for a full tour against Pakistan involving three Tests, four ODIs and three T20s, followed by the trip to South Africa and the the World T20 in India. It has also been noticeable during the Ashes how Root has struggled with his back.

As expected, James Anderson and Stuart Broad continue to be left out of the one-day side having not played since the World Cup. It appears increasingly likely, especially with Anderson, that they are being saved for Test cricket. Reece Topley, the Essex left-armer, who was part of the T20 squad against New Zealand is included for the T20 at Cardiff. Moeen was omitted from the one-day matches against New Zealand so that he could play red-ball cricket for Worcestershire ahead of the Ashes. He could open alongside Alex Hales in the series against Australia although Jason Roy is retained in the squads.

Woakes is back with England for the first time since the World Cup when he sustained a foot injury and then, during his recovery from that, he underwent knee surgery.

There could well have been temptation to rest other players who had been involved in the Ashes - with a view to England’s forthcoming series against Pakistan - but Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Mark Wood are all included (although Wood will not play the T20) to reinforce the view that this current England hierarchy are taking one-day cricket seriously.

National selector, James Whitaker, said: “We have made some significant progress in our limited-overs cricket this summer and the next six games allow these players to continue testing themselves against one of the very best sides in the world.

“This is primarily a young group of players and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience as we continue to identify players who can take our limited overs cricket forward over the next four years.”
