The Mercantile Volleyball Association of Sri Lanka (MVA) is once again organising the annual mercantile volleyball tournament in a bid to popularise the national sport and to widen the interest in the game in the mercantile sector. Over 100 teams participated at last year’s tournament and the Association hopes for an ever better response this year.

A member of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, this is the fourth successive year that MVA is holding the tournament since its revival in 2012 after a lapse of five years.

The objective of the Association is to provide a meaningful avenue to be rid of mental fatigue of the mercantile employees whose performance can enhance by participating in sports. Volleyball being a team sport, it helps to build up team spirit among the employees thereby benefitting the organisation they work for. The game also helps to unearth hidden sporting talent among the employees while helping to improve their health.

This year’s tournament will be held in September/October. It has now become a regular event in the annual sports calendar.

The tournament is held under the accepted national rules and regulations and provides an opportunity for both males and females to participate.

The preliminary rounds are scheduled to be held at the Maharagama Youth Services courts on 5 and 6 September while the finals will be held on 4 October at the Maharagama Youth Services Indoor Stadium.

To qualify for participation, the players should have served in the respective companies for a minimum of three months and joined the institution prior to 30 July. Meanwhile, new clubs can register until 15 August.

The tournament will be held under three categories - Super League, Championship & Division ‘A’. Prize money for the winning teams will exceed Rs. 1 million and the best performer will receive a motorcycle. Trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners-up and to the best player – male and female.

The awards to be distributed among the different categories will be as follows:
