Nobuhito Hobo, Ambassador of Japan yesterday handed over 11 Fire Fighting Vehicles to A.J.M Muzammil, His Worship the Mayor, Colombo Muncipal Council at an official handing over ceremony held at the Colombo Municipal Council premises.

“The Project for Upgrading Fire Engines in Colombo” which was implemented by the Fire Service Department of Colombo Muncipal Council, facilitated the procurement of 11 used fire engines and fire protection gear from Japan which will contribute to enhancing the safety of human lives in Colombo city and suburbs by providing upgraded firefighting and security services. The fire engines and protection gear procured under this project will be deployed at the Head office at Maradana and sub stations at Grandpass, Wellawatta and Pettah.  11 used fire engines and fire protection gear which were handed over to Colombo Municipal Council today were initially donated by several local authorities in Japan (3 from Koka city, 2 from Kyoto city, and one each from Hiroshima city, Yoshida Makinohara Fire Department, Hikone city, Otokuni Fire Department, Ichinomiya city, and Konan city), through the dedicated coordination of Japan Sri Lanka Economic Exchange Association, which carries a particular scheme to coordinate donation of second-hand vehicles such as fire engines to foreign countries.

This contribution is viewed as momentous in the upgrading of Fire Units, which will have a tremendous impact on the security and safety of the rapidly increasing human population and invaluable property in and around the city of Colombo. This cordial gesture is also viewed as further strengthening warm and friendly relations between the two countries.
