The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) in a statement has expressed its strong condemnation and abhorrence of the incident which took place in Jaffna where the Court premises came under attack.

“The Bar Association of Sri Lanka is of the view that this conduct amounts to a serious and unwarranted interference with the administration of justice and the judicial process,” said a statement signed by BASL President Geoffrey Alagaratnam PC and Secretary Ajith Pathirana.

The BASL called upon the Attorney General and the other law enforcement authorities, including the Inspector General of Police, to bring the perpetrators to justice.

It also called on the authorities to provide the necessary security to court premises to protect the honour, dignity and respect of the holders of judicial office and of the judicial system.

“The Bar Association of Sri Lanka affirms that the honour, dignity and security of the court and court premises are critical for ensuring the proper functioning of a democracy and the upholding of the Rule of Law,” the statement added.
