Sri Lankan mobile content specialist, zMessenger, and the British Council in Sri Lanka, announced yesterday that they have initiated a strategic partnership to deliver ‘Learn English with the British Council’ – a personalised English language learning service, at the convenience of mobile phone users.

British Council Sri Lanka Deputy Director Paul Hilder and zMessenger Chief Marketing Officer Jayomi Lokuliyana

‘Learn English with the British Council’ is a simplified and interactive medium through which users can test and practise their English language skills through their mobile phone.  The service allows users to practise their grammar and vocabulary and provides essential language learning tips for all levels of learners.

This unique service also provides feedback to users on their performance by British Council language experts. ‘Learn English with the British Council’ is available in three different levels, namely Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced.

Thus it can be enjoyed by almost all mobile phone users.

As an organisation that builds engagement between the UK and Sri Lanka through the exchange of knowledge and ideas, the British Council in Sri Lanka sees the roll out of ‘Learn English with the British Council’ as a promising delivery to develop English language skills.

British Council Sri Lanka Deputy Director Paul Hilder said: “We are delighted to be working with zMessenger to bring ‘Learn English with the British Council’ to the public. We intend this to be the first in a series of British Council products supporting the learning of English using mobile devices, as part of our plans to provide support to people learning English across Sri Lanka, whether or not they can attend our face-to-face courses.”

Adding to Hilder’s comments, zMessenger Chief Marketing Officer Jayomi Lokuliyana said: “We’re very excited about this prestigious new partnership with one of the most innovative and dynamic institutions in English learning today. We are eager to work with the British Council as they represent a perfect example of the evolution of our ‘Mobilisation’ concept, i.e. a merging of interactive mobile technologies with contemporary needs of learning. This initiative will help bridge the gap we have here in Sri Lanka between English language learning and those English language skills which are becoming a sine qua non condition for success in life.”

‘Learn English with the British Council’ will initially be available for all Etisalat mobile phone service subscribers. Etisalat users can register by typing ENG and sending it to 3333 to benefit from this service.
