In an attempt to develop its managers to become leaders, Deutsche Bank sought the services of the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) to conduct a day-workshop titled ‘Leadership Essentials’ on Thursday, 7 July 2011, at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

The ‘Leadership Essentials’ Workshop in progress

The leadership essentials comprised the three following imperatives: Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving and Decision Making.

Organisations whose expectations are to survive, grow and sustain in their businesses, while retaining their skilled and competent employees, must have leaders who understand the radically new paradigm in which the knowledge worker operates.

Participants in the workshop developed their ability to inspire trust, as well as the knowledge to identify and address the major problems that undermine success.

The workshop commenced with the basic leadership imperative of emotional intelligence, which enables one to recognise one’s emotions, while providing the ability to reason as well as manage emotions. The participants also learnt how to respond positively to team feedback, improve team relationships, and to adapt positively, being accountable for outcomes in the drive toward excellence.

The other two leadership essentials, namely, problem solving and decision making are considered twin areas that go hand in hand in ensuring an uninterrupted flow of activities in an organisation. These are, in fact, important skills for business and life. Problem-solving often involves decision-making, and decision-making is especially important for management and leadership.

The workshop was a well-knit programme that followed a logical and sequential flow of activities from the beginning to the end.

The ‘Leadership Essentials’ workshop thus provided the foundation for those in leadership positions to think, act, and lead from the new management paradigm.  Participants in the programme learnt powerful concepts and tools to help them lead, support, and inspire a talented, valuable workforce.

The PIM faculty comprised Professor Uditha Liyanage, Director, PIM, Dr. Travis Perera and Dr. Ajantha S. Dharmasiri. K.A.I.Kalyanaratne coordinated the programme.
