On the first weekend of August in 2014, Pettah Interchange will return for its third incarnation to give Sri Lankan audiences a taste of the German subculture using unconventional public locations to celebrate music and the arts. After the abandoned Gaffoor Building of 2012 and the grubby incense marketplace of 2013, this year Bordermovement will turn the neglected but iconic Rio Cinema and hotel in Slave Island into an audio-visual club experience of international standards across two stages and with a number of local twists. Headlining the event this year is the Berlin based DJ/Producer duo and head of Tonkind Records, Turmspringer alongside Kater Holzig/Bar 25 resident and label manager; Peter Schumann. Bolstering the lineup will be a number of tegional acts including a back to back DJ set from Rudoh and Dynoman of Karachi‘s Forever South Records as well as Menimal and Om:Mega of the Maldivian collective known as the Underground Movement. Representing the local scene will be heavyweights of the local circuit Asvajit (Jambutek Recordings/Bang Bang) and Shiyam (BookaBooka) alongside underground favorites Geve, Sunara and Curio. Adding some diversity to the lineup, Pettah Interchange 2014 will also feature eclectic live sets from Daffy Maestro, Tomcat and Magnum as well as Type B from the SynQ music collective. Following the success of last years VJ interchange conducted by indian visual collective BLOT! This years event will feature extensive work by the 2014 South Asian Visual Interchange under the mentorship of Berlin based digital collective Pfadfinderei. Bordermovement: Video Lab 2014 Colombo Expanding the concept of the 2013 BLOT! VJ-Interchange Border-movement brings together talented digital visual artists from India, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka for a hands-on club visuals and digital video image processing workshop which will be led by two of the Berlin-based visuals crew Pfadfinderei: Finding and visualising paths was the approach that led to the name Pfadfinderei (i.e. pathfinders/boyscouts). Starting off in 1999 as a Berlin-based vector orientated design bureau, Pfadfinderei soon expanded to what might be characterised as a cluster of advanced media alchemists given their aggressive passion for Live music visualisation. Back in the day, they VJ‘d in clubs in Berlin and around the region... nowadays they are planning, creating, and performing full-scale visual installations, in and beyond the club scene. On 2 August Pfadfinderei and the South Asian Video Lab will turn the old screens and crumbling walls of the Rio Hotel and Cinema into projection surfaces for a night of optical illusions and visual stimulation at Pettah Interchange 2014.

 Artists Bios

Turmspringer At the first blush it becomes obvious, Robert Galic (alias Edgar Peng aka RAS) and Tim Brüggemann (alias Didier de la Boutique) are deeply rooted in  Funk and Soul, Jazz and Afro Beat, in general the whole topic of Black Music played an important role in their musical imprint. Their musical taste, background and not at least their individual vinyl collection made them stick together as a DJ and producer team. In 2001, they met first time behind the turntables. Robert just had left London to settle down in Berlin, attracted by Jazzanova, to release his world wide appreciated album Rhythmic Altered State on Sonar Kollektiv. To this point of time, Tim was already involved into the colorful Rare Funk scene of Berlin. Beside this facts, both have been Inspired by Berlin’s great output of electronic music. For a musical medium in Berlin, this sound and movement could not have been ignored. Once in the studio, having put together their understanding of rhythm and dance and contemporary electronic music, their own sound of a fresh and funky Techno was born and got the name Turmspringer. Now, since 2004 the producer and DJ team is strongly associated with the underground of Berlin’s Techno and House scene. By the last years they passed through an authentic development and captured this unique night scene peace by peace. Their impulsive and colored sound and their infective positive energy behind the decks and instruments, made them swap quickly from an insider tip to one of Berlin’s most wanted DJs and electronic live acts. This high profile made them get in touch with many other creative and productive people, what lead to the founding of an own label. In 2005 Robert started Tonkind, where acts like Skinnerbox, Notic Nastic and of course Turmspringer themselves had their first release debut. Meanwhile the label hold a colourful release catalogue with other well known acts like Kotelett and Zadak, NicoStojan, Alexkid or Philip Bader and many others. The regular circulating label nights and off parties provides not only Tonkind acts to show up but also keep the network with other labels in flow. Collaborations with Bar 25, Katerholzig or Berlin’s underground queen Bachstelzen are agenda for them. Although Turmspringer have been playing in several big clubs in Europe, they never missed to come back to their mother’s kitchen to please Berlin’s spoiled and electrifying audience. Here they still attend their one-of a-kind industrial backyard parties and Berlin’s most wanted after-hours. Last but not least their releases on Get Physical, Eminor, Doxa, Klasse Recordings and of course Tonkind shows their ability and flexibility as producers. Peter Schumann DJ and producer Peter Schumann was born and raised in Gera, Germanny, also where he discovered his passion for “black gold” two years before moving to Frankfurt in 1997. Settling in did not take long and soon he had set up his own series of events in space place aka TanzhausWest (Frankfurt). At the same time he started DJing for Radio X DJ Night on a regular basis. He is known for minimal grooving beats and a colourful variety of house, Detroit and minimal. Peter’s first release was published in 2002, together with Marcus Martinez as Audiomaton 3d Records. After a two-year break the next strike was made, this time together with good friend Benjamin Fehr on the Frankfurt label Catenaccio. In 2005 Peter played his part on Compilation ElektronischeMusik – Intercontinental 4 for the Cologne label Traumschallplatten. His first solo run was the Elster Records release Delicate Issue – a complex EP full of both gloom and dreaminess – making you hope for more! Between 2004-2007 he was managing Anthony Rother’s Datapunk, Psi49net and Stahl labels featuring productions of DJ Hell, Sven Väth, Anthony Rother and Gregor Tresher and of course his own. In 2010 after moving to Berlin, Peter started Platte International, his own strictly limited imprint, only available on vinyl. Since then he has been managing the BAR25 label, as well as working as a booking agent for Kater Holzig. Alongside, he is holding long-term DJ residencies for Zukunft in Zurich, Dora Brilliant/Tanzhaus West in Frankfurt and Kater Blau (Berlin). Om:mega Om:mega’s love for music runs deep. Inspired by the heart of the universe, his approach to DJing is simple. It has to have a soul. Starting out as a drummer in the local Maldivian band 1984, he made the transition to everything electronic back in 2009, when he and a group of friends decided to form a Live Electronic Band named Chi, tailored for the Maldivian resort setting. Since then, he has been DJing full time and currently holds a residency at one of the most exclusive resorts in the Maldives, the one and only Reethi Rah. Grooving away as he weaves his selections, his DJ sets are filled with elements of storytelling through lush, organic and groovy deep house. He, along with some of his closest friends, help found the Underground Movement, a platform to promote and harness the power of underground electronic music. Menimal Hopping around the Maldives equipped with a mobile laboratory in his backpack for close to seven years, Menimal’s sound has evolved into something that is nostalgic yet futuristic, primal but ahead of the curve. One of the founders of the local audio/visual collective The Underground Movement and a pioneer of the local electronic music scene, Menimal has collaborated and performed with a variety of local and international artists. He has worked with many luxury brands like Per Aquum, Dusit Thani and held residencies at the Waldorf Astoria’s Beach House at Manafaru in 2009, Conrad Maldives at Rangali Island from 2010 till 2013, and has also had the privilege of performing at the Ministry of Sound in London in 2012. He is currently expecting his first release on the Sri Lankan Label Jambutek Recordings. His signature sound is minimal and fluid, scattered with tongue-in-cheek clips of speeches and recordings. Menimal is unafraid to move between different formats and is constantly seeking out the unconventional. “The pace of reality is far behind when the bass goes boom! Forever South A collective of electronic beat musicians from Karachi Pakistan but are not limited to just that. Their beats are undefined but defined via vibe. Their specific collection of musicians makes up this vibe. They post tracks and beats regularly on their page, be it singles, remixes, collaborations, EPs or LPs.
