JASTECA Institute of Management (JIM), the training arm of Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA), provides a wide range of management training programs and holds monthly public seminars and workshops on management and technical themes.

A few months ago Jasteca Institute of Management launched for the first time in Sri Lanka the much-looked-for JASTECA Certification Program for Advanced 5S instructors with a batch of 30 5S practitioners. The second certification and training on Advanced 5S took place at the JASTECA training facility in Colombo 3, at the Sasakawa Auditorium from 12 to 14 February 2013.

Participants for this batch were selected from the service as well as from manufacturing industries. Some leading corporates in the service industries too nominated some of their internal 5S practitioners to undergo this rigorous certification program.

This highly-recognised JASTECA certification consisted of two days of gruelling training followed by a written competency examination and a demonstration on Advanced 5S implementation by each participant. The course was conducted by renowned 5S expert and quality guru Sunil Wijesinha.

As part of their training the candidates were also coached on the use of the exclusive JASTECA Audit Sheets, used by JASTECA Auditors when conducting 5S audits with companies taking part in its annual Taiki Akimoto 5S competition.

The initiative taken by Mahinda Saranapala, who was responsible in introducing the 5S concept to Sri Lanka, provided the certified instructors an exclusive insight on how to conduct 5S audits on their visit to Kelani Cables Plc on the third day of training. Saranapala is the Chief Executive Officer of the 5S award winning organisation, Kelani Cables.

This visit was invaluable as it provided insights on the practical aspects on auditing and prescribing corrective measures to an organisation practicing 5S so that these practices could be sustained over a long period of time. Sustaining 5S practices is, in fact, a major challenge faced by all practicing organisations. Nimal Perera, an expert of 5S training and auditing who has many years of experience as a 5S Trainer, lead the audit team on this benchmark audit at Kelani Cables.

JASTECA Institute of Management will continue to support these JASTECA Certified Advanced 5S instructors in their continuous professional development and networking so that the organisations that these instructors serve will be immensely benefitted.

Through this certification program JASTECA Institute of Management hopes to develop and equip a team of  high quality Advanced 5S and Kaizen instructors, who will be the catalyst of change in the corporate and the public sectors of Sri Lanka.

JASTECA Institute of Management is now ready to connect up these experts with the commercial and industry spheres in Sri Lanka.
