‘Collection de Perles’ – Tiesh’s offering this festive season

Tiesh, Sri Lanka’s much sought-after brand of jewellery, mesmerises jewellery lovers this forthcoming festive season with the launch of its exquisite ‘Collection de Perles’.

Since its discovery by ancient fishing tribes, pearls have inspired the most impressive historical events with the Roman General Vitellius financing an entire military campaign by selling just one of his mother’s pearl earrings. The most luxurious banquet in history was hosted by Queen Cleopatra who drank a crushed pearl to prove the wealth of Eygpt as opposed to Rome as both empires prized the pearl above all other gems. Egypt’s use of pearls dates back to 4200 B.C, while Roman women were driven into a frenzy by upholstering their furniture with pearls and embellishing their gowns with pearls to display their wealth. 

Sri Lanka too has a rich history associated with pearls with the ancient chronicle Mahavamsa mentioning the thriving pearl industry in the port of Oruwella, in the Gulf of Mannar. It also records that eight varieties of pearls accompanied Prince Vijaya’s embassy to the Pandyan King as well as King Devanampiya Tissa’s embassy to Emperor Ashoka.
