World heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield paid a courtesy call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday at Temple Trees along with Dr. K.A. Paul, a Christian preacher from the United States. Here during their meeting the sporty Rajapaksa gestures a fight and the return from Holyfield is only a smile.

For few days, the not so ‘whole truth’ was out in the market, but perhaps due to the Opposition’s fire and realising the blunder and implications, a better-late-than-never conspicuous correction termed “clarification” has finally saved the face of Central Bank.

Swimming lowers older adults’ blood pressure

Reuters Health: Many older adults like to take a dip a pool, and now a small study suggests it can be good for their blood pressure.
Researchers found that among 43 older men and women, those who started swimming a few times a week lowered their systolic blood pressure — the “top” number in a blood pressure reading.
On average, the swimmers started the study with a systolic blood pressure of 131 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Three months later, it was 122 mm Hg.

Hot on the heels of the opening of Citrus Hikkaduwa, a 93-room luxury resort, Citrus Leisure Plc yesterday laid the foundation stone for Citrus Waskaduwa, a 150-room 5-star luxury resort that is expected to be opened towards the end of 2012.

Piramal Glass Ceylon beats FY 11 net profit in 9 months of FY12

Sales during this quarter grew by 18% to Rs. 1.37 b

Piramal Glass Ceylon PLC (PGC), a manufacturer of specialty glass containers for food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics and perfumery, has reported a turnover of Rs. 1.37 billion and Net Profit of Rs. 205 million for the third quarter ended 31 December 2011 of FY 2011/12.

These must be backed by new product variation and differentiations in terms of marketing, research and development according to Plantation Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.

Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa participated in the handing over ceremony of approximately Rs. 827 million worth of machinery to expedite the Provincial Road Development Programme and Irrigation System Development Programme initiated by the Ministry of Economic Development islandwide.
