Ceylon Tobacco contributes Rs. 30.6 b to State coffers in six months

1H after tax profit up Rs. 900 million to Rs. 2.6 b

Ceylon Tobacco Company said yesterday it has contributed Rs. 30.6 b to Government revenue in the first half of 2011, up by Rs. 5.1 b over last year.

SLIC and Browns sign up to boost agriculture

One of Sri Lanka’s largest conglomerates, Brown and Company yesterday signed up with the country’s insurance giant Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) to offer greater convenience to the agro sector of the country.
The merger stands for a unique comprehensive insurance package for four-wheel owners, specifically TAFE customers.

Stocks at three-week high on earning hopes

* Rupee firmer, ending nine straight sessions   
Reuters: Sri Lanka’s bourse jumped 2.9 per cent on Friday to a three-week high on high turnover and volumes, sparked by hopes of good quarterly earnings and rumours the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may roll back plans to end margin trading.

COLOMBO (Reuters): Sri Lanka’s annual inflation surprisingly picked up in July from a year earlier as higher transport costs overwhelmed an improved domestic agricultural supply, putting pressure on the island nation’s accommodative monetary policy.

Flemingo awarded duty free contract at BIA

Flemingo Group has been awarded a contract to open a 6,000 sq feet duty free shop at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), giving competition for the estimated US$ 55 million revenue from travellers.

The Ministry of Health earlier this week organised a presentation on mobilising commitment and action to address NCDs in Sri Lanka.
